Response to a UK Government-Appointed Committee Proposal That International Flights be Included in Restrictions

According to the UK's Airport Operator's Association (AOA),  the UK Government-appointed Climate Change Committee recommends that incoming international flights should be included in an effort to reduce carbon emissions in the UK by 80% by 2050.

The AOA Executive Chairman Ed Anderson called the findings "counterproductive".  He went on to say:

“Tackling aviation emissions needs to take place at an international level. It is counterproductive to set a UK-only emissions reduction target for aviation, which will simply result in emissions being shifted elsewhere in Europe whilst costing passengers more.

”The Aviation industry is working hard to increase its efficiency through technological advances, including the ACARE targets set by the industry which are already leading to greater fuel efficiency year on year. Additionally, Government figures already show that aviation is already more than covering its carbon costs, through the existing Air Passenger Duty regime.

“The AOA fully supports the inclusion of aviation within the EU’s Emissions Trading Scheme, which offers an international solution to what is an international issue.“
